BCC Has Plans to Build a New NI Sports Stadium

Belfast City Council currently has plans to build a new N.Ireland sports stadium, it has emerged.

A new report has outlined options for where the facility could be built.
UUP councillor Bob Stoker, chair of the council's parks and leisure committee, said a substantial case had been made for a stadium in the city.
"Some councillors require additional information on site specific questions which will be dealt with over the next couple of months," he said.
He added that a vote on where to build the stadium would be taken by the council in the months to come.
The site for a national stadium in Northern Ireland has divided political opinion.
Sinn Fein has said the party will not backup the idea unless it is on the site of the Maze Prison.
However, some unionists oppose the Maze site because of plans for a conflict transformation centre at the stadium.

The IFA and Ulster Rugby have all confirmed they would play games at the Maze venue.

Head of the strategic Investment Team and Head Cheerleader for the Maze, Tony Whitehead has resigned. Some are heralding this as confirmation that, following the reshuffle of the DUP'S leadership, the proposals to build a stadium at the Maze have "collapsed".

Coming shortly after the announcement that there will be no Olympic Football at the Maze, even if plans for a stadium do go ahead, there is certainly a feeling that the Maze is not the done deal we were told it was over 4 years ago.
